Song of the Day for 08/14/09

Desert MoonScott’s Friday ‘80s Pick

Artist: Dennis DeYoung
Song: Desert Moon
Album: Desert Moon
Label: A&M
Sounds Like: Just about every other cheesy love ballad you’ve ever heard

It’s a well know fact that a lot of songs from the 1980s were built around the potential of it having a blockbuster music video. Not only did this lead to MTV’s dominance in the music industry, it also led to some highly entertaining four-minute films.

In that vein, this week’s Friday ’80s Pick is actually more about the video than the song.

The song “Desert Moon” marked Dennis DeYoung’s venture into a solo career after leaving Styx, and gave him some immediate success, hitting No. 10 on the Billboard charts in 1984.

However, the song is forgettable. Now the video, on the other hand, is somewhat of a masterpiece.

Coming in at a whopping 6 minutes, 29 seconds, “Desert Moon” packs the story of a love gone astray into the combination of a Maxwell House Coffee commercial and a beer ad.

Complete with men’s short-shorts, curly mullets and numerous montages of the song’s crooner staring off into space, this video keeps you entertained from beginning to end.

Whether or not you like the song doesn’t matter. Once you see the video, you will never forget it. Click the link below to find out what I mean
